HD shoots in a 16:9 rectangle format, whereas SD shoots in a 4:3 square format. To confuse things even more SD can shoot in 16:9 mode as well but since HD has double the resolution size, the picture is sharper and crisper. And even if the HD image is delivered on a SD DVD the image is still better.
